John Richards, owner of Rare Bird, was delighted with his Visionarry. Having completed a number of sea trials out of Coffs Harbour and despite a few teething problems the boat was declared a great success. Johnny, Mark, and Paul Napper had a fantastic sail down the coast while talking about places to sail and the possibility of a world circumnavigation. They entered the Macleay River and left Rare Bird on her new mooring. Tragically that was the last time Johnny saw his boat. Within two weeks John received a diagnosis of terminal lung and spine cancer and died at home in the care of his family and friends, less than three months later. Following Buddist tradition we waited 49 days before John's ashes were scattered over the bows of his beloved boat into the sea he loved so much.
